“Presence” is generally regarded as a component of Unified Communications (UC) which communicates the availability status of those on the communications network. By letting others know if the employee is in a meeting, on the phone, away from the office, on vacation, at lunch, etc., communications can be accelerated. For example, if an employee is shown to be “on a call”, a colleague with critical information may choose to send the employee an IM with that information. In addition, the presence status of a particular individual can dictate call handling rules. If an accounting employee is in “lunch” status, she may want incoming calls directed to voicemail, except for calls from her manager, which would ring through to her cell phone.
